WCBB is changing the landscape of women’s sports

The 2023 National Collegiate Athletic Association women’s basketball tournament championship peaked at 12 million views, making it not only the mostwatched women’s college basketball game ever but the most-watched collegiate basketball game ever, period.

Thanks to generational superstars Caitlin Clark from the University of Iowa and Angel Reese from Louisiana State University (LSU), one should ask, why are we late to the party?

We’ve had so many great athletes flourish through basketball and other sports. On August 30, 2023, the University of Nebraska volleyball team set the world record for crowd attendance for a women’s sporting event. Striker Mia Hamm led the USA to its historic win at the 1999 Women’s World Cup and was named the Women’s Federation International Football Association World Player of the Year for the first two years the award was given. Billie Jean King won 39 grand slams throughout her career, not to mention defeating Bobby Riggs in the battle of the sexes,” which brought in 50 million viewers worldwide. The National Women’s Soccer League recently signed a new media rights deal; meanwhile, both Women’s College Basketball and the Women’s National Basketball Association are set to negotiate new television contracts in the coming years.

The NCAA is currently exploring options for the women’s college basketball tournament, which is traditionally packaged with other NCAA sports minus the men’s tournament and is widely considered undervalued as is. It’s been 52 years since the “Title X” civil rights act was signed into law, and for decades, women athletes have continued to grow as the best is yet to come. It’s 2024, and WCBB has yet to reach its peak. But his women’s history month, the sky is the limit for WCBB.
