Teams take to practice field
High school football teams are getting down to business.
Holly Springs, Potts Camp, Byhalia and H.W. Byers started practice this week. Marshall Academy is in its second week.
Jamborees and season-openers are just around the corner.
Donald Deans, head coach of the Hawks, said his team made great strides during a summer team camp at Muscle Shoals, Ala. Holly Springs was one of three schools participating from Mississippi.
“We really did an excellent job there, in individual drills and in team competition,” said Deans, who carried 25 players. “The individual drills, with over 20 position coaches, was really the most beneficial.”
The Class 3A Hawks will play in the Oxford High School jamboree on Saturday, Aug. 12, at 5 p.m. versus Coffeeville.
The season opener is Friday night, Aug. 18, at home versus cross-county rival Byhalia.
“We’re excited about the season,” Deans said. “We’re not deep, but we have some core guys who are very talented.”
At Potts Camp, coach Markeith Washington will see his Cardinals move from 2A to 1A this season.
“We will be able to match up better,” he said. “Our goal is to be productive in 1A and create a new style of football here at Potts Camp.”
Washington calls his new offense not traditional and “kind of crazy.” He plans to use a three-quarterback system.
“I’ve been studying different offenses,” he said. “We’re adjusting to modern-day football. We’re going to make it exciting for our fans.”
The Cardinals plan to host a jamboree on Friday, Aug. 11, with H.W. Byers, Hamilton and perhaps other schools participating.
Potts Camp kicks off the season Friday, Aug. 18, at home versus Lee Academy (Ark.).
At Byers, coach Chris Daniels had to fill an open date at the last minute. Houlka was scheduled for week two of the season but that school disbanded its football program.
The Lions will now visit Coldwater August 25, which means they will play the Cougars twice this season. Byers hosts Coldwater on October 6 for homecoming.
The Lions kick off the season on Thursday night, Aug. 17, at home versus Hickory Flat.
Marshall Academy will start the season one week earlier than other teams in the county. The Patriots will play in the Southeastern Commission of Independent Schools Kickoff Classic at Montgomery, Ala., on Saturday, Aug. 12, at 5 p.m. Their opponent, at the Cramton Bowl, is Brookwood School of Thomasville, Ga.
