Sweats sweeps GCAC player and Newcomer of the week

The Rust College women’s basketball program is ranked 23rd in the nation, and one of the biggest reasons is Diamond Sweats, who has been the driving force behind a trio of key victories on her way to earning the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference’s Player and Newcomer of the Week honors for the second and third times, respectively this season.

Sweats, a six-foot shooting guard from Dallas, Texas, posted 68 points (17.0 per game), 19 rebounds (4.8 per game), 11 assists (2.8 per game), and seven steals (1.8 per game) while making 25-of-53 (47.2 percent) field goal attempts and going 11-for-22 (50 percent) from three-point territory.

The Texarkana transfer has collected at least a dozen points and at least one assist in all eight of the Lady Bearcats’ competitions on top of six multi-steal defensive outings.

Looking ahead, the only game on the board over the next nine days is the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference opener for both Rust and the Fisk University Bulldogs, which will take place at 5 p.m. On Thursday, Nov. 30, in Nashville, Tenn.
