State champs!

• Potts Camp wins first

The Potts Camp High School archery team brought home the state championship Wednesday, April 6. The team placed first in AIMS High School Class 1A.

There were 18 schools that competed in that category, and Potts Camp won by 33 points.

Allison Skelton and Jackson McQueen were the top shooters for males and females. Skelton shot a 282 and is ranked 25th in the state for girls. McQueen shot a 279. As a first-year shooter he is ranked 83rd in the state. As a team, Potts Camp shot a 3175.

The score is figured by taking the top 12 shooters from the team and combining the scores. For the state competition, the top 12 shooters were Allison Skelton, 282; Jackson McQueen, 279; Drake Johnson, 275; Hunter Palmer, 267; Brent Smith, 267; Ian Clifton, 263; Austin Martin, 261; Parker Brandon, 259; Lily Tate, 258; Jonathan McIntire 257; Madison Skelton, 256; Riley Baldwin 251.

There are a total of 33 archers on the team with 21 of them averaging 240 points or better.

Debra Skelton and Danny Mills are the coaches and worked very hard the past three months with practices and meets at different schools across North Mississippi. Potts Camp archery had an 85 record this season. Most of the losses were to large schools in Desoto County.

The team recently had a fund-raiser for the team called “Shoot-Out at the PC Corral.” That night seniors were recognized, and parents and grandparents were allowed to shoot. The night finished with a barbecue meal.

The archery team plans on raising money for championship rings. If you are interested in helping, please contact Potts Camp School, 662-333-6354.
