Should fans be excited about the Egg Bowl this year?

Since 1901, Ole Miss and Mississippi A&M/Mississippi State have met every year for not only the golden egg but bragging rights amongst fellow Mississippians. A rivalry separated by 113 miles has seen its fair share of iconic moments. The 1929 Egg Bowl ended in a 7-7 tie; the 1927 game was the first game that ended with a trophy won. Who could ever forget the “immaculate reception”game of 1983, and lastly the most famous one as of recently, “the piss and miss” game of 2018, when then receiver Elijah Moore celebrated by doing a gesture of a dog peeing on the sidelines? The penalty eventually cost the Rebels the game after the penalty was missed due to the penalty.

So many memorable moments, we could go on for days talking about the Egg Bowl. But what about this year? Is the 121st Egg Bowl set to be the worst one yet? The largest margin of victory came back in 1915, as the Bulldogs shutout the Rebs 65-0. Many think the Rebels may return that favor. Though rivalry games can and have been very intense, the gap between the two rival schools may be the widest it has ever been. Saturday at Wake Forest, the Rebels played a sloppy game and still won 40-6 over the Demon Deacons. Mississippi State welcomed Toledo to Starkvegas, and the Rockets took off, leaving Davis Wade in complete shock. The Rebels have the highest scoring average in the country, averaging a little under 60 PPG, while the Bulldogs are 60th in the country, averaging 30 PPG. Half of the Rebels explosive numbers. Look on the bright side; if you are a Mississippi State fan, the good news is you won’t have to watch the Egg Bowl on Thanksgiving this year, so you will get to enjoy supper and late-night seconds, but prepare yourself because the holiday season could be one to forget.
