Rust College’s Michaela Payton named HBCUAC Women’s Basketball Defensive Player of the Week
Rust College Women’s Basketball standout Michaela Payton has been named the HBCU Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) Defensive Player of the Week for the week of January 6-12. Payton’s stellar defensive performances helped secure her second conference award of the season, solidifying her as one of the league's premier players.
In a dominant display against Dillard University on January 6, Payton posted a monster stat line of 19 points, 16 rebounds, 4 blocks, and 1 steal. She followed it up with another impactful performance against Tougaloo on January 7, recording 7 points, 12 rebounds, and 4 blocks.
This award adds to Payton’s growing list of accolades this season, as she was previously honored as HBCUAC Newcomer of the Week in November. Currently, she leads the conference in rebounds per game with an average of 12 and ranks 4th in field goal percentage at an impressive 54.8%.
Head Coach Jaleesa Sams praised Payton’s contributions, stating, “Michaela is a force on the court, and her impact goes beyond the stats. Her defensive presence and leadership are key to our success this season. We’re proud of her accomplishments and excited to see her continue to excel.”
The Lady Bearcats, led by Payton’s dominant performances, will look to maintain their momentum as they hit the road this weekend to face conference opponents Oakwood and Stillman. Fans can catch the Lady Bearcats at home on January 29, when they host Arkansas Baptist in a rescheduled matchup due to inclement weather.
