Rust basketball season comes to a close after hard-fought tournament
The Rust College Bearcats Men’s Basketball team concluded its season on a hard-fought note after a narrow 83-80 loss to 6-seed SUNO (Southern University of New Orleans) in the inaugural HBCUAC Athletic Conference Tournament. As the 11-seed team, the Bearcats battled throughout the game, staying close until early in the second half when SUNO built a 19-point lead.
Despite a valiant comeback effort that brought the score to within one possession at 8082, a missed free throw opportunity allowed SUNO to secure the rebound and run the clock out.
The Bearcats finish the season with an overall record of 817 and a conference record of 5-13. Despite the season’s challenges, the team boasts several significant accomplishments. Notably, the Bearcats made history by defeating rival LeMoyne-Owen College twice in the same season for the first time ever, and Head Coach Howard White earned his 100th career win, a milestone that underscores his dedication and leadership.
“Although we didn’t get the win in the tournament, I’m incredibly proud of our team’s resilience and the progress we’ve made this year,” said Head Coach Howard White. “Achievements like our historic wins over LeMoyne-Owen and reaching my 100th career win are milestones that we will build on as we continue to develop our program.”
