Potts Camp teams sweep West Union

With the game on the line, Potts Camp had the basketball in the right person’s hands.

LaKayla Collins went six of six from the free-throw line in the last 34 seconds as the Lady Cardinals beat Region 2-1A foe West Union 69-61 Tuesday, Jan. 31, at home.

For the game, Collins was 15 of 17 from the line, including nine of 10 in the fourth quarter.

Potts Camp struggled to start the game, falling behind 12-4 with 2:09 to go in the first.

Then at the 5:55 mark of the second, Jazmine Anderson’s steal and bucket put the Lady Cardinals up 15-14, and they never trailed again. The lead was 30-22 at halftime.

Kylie Gurley scored off an assist from Ashley Anderson in the third to put Potts Camp up 10. It was 49-41 at the end of the quarter.

J. Anderson scored early in the fourth to stretch the advantage to 54-43, but West Union didn’t quit. Behind the shooting of Allie Green, who finished with a game-high 29 points, they rallied to tie the game at 61.

Potts Camp’s Ashley Anderson hit a shot with 1:08 left to put the home team back up by two, and then a calm Collins did the rest.

A. Anderson was the top scorer for coach Brad Wren’s team as she finished with 18. Collins had 17 and J. Anderson 16.

The outcome of the second game of the night was never in doubt. The Potts Camp boys were constantly clicking the scoreboard as they cruised to a 96-55 win over West Union.

The Cards were up 24-13 after one quarter, courtesy of Kedavian Faulkner’s three.

Mitchell Saulsberry dunked to close the first half and the lead was 45-30.

Late in the third, Martavious Frost slammed, Jaquives Muse drilled a three and then Kylan Conners dunked. It was 75-46 with the home crowd going wild.

Coach Jeremy Dillard’s squad went on to nearly break the century mark and win by 41 points.

Saulsberry poured in a game-high 26 points. Others in double digits were Muse with 18, including four threes, Frost with 16 and Faulkner with 15.

Potts Camp-Hickory Flat

Potts Camp made the short bus ride to Hickory Flat Friday and split with their rivals from neighboring Benton County.

Saulsberry finished off a 50-point week (in two games) with 24 in the Cardinals’ 78-71 district victory over the Rebels.

Frost was also in double figures with 11.

Potts Camp had its hands full in the first half. The lead was just 32-26 at intermission.

Then Saulsberry scored 13 of his points in the third as the Cardinals pulled ahead 60-44 entering the fourth.

Potts Camp survived a Rebel rally try in the fourth.

Hitting in double digits for Hickory Flat were C.J. McKinnie with 24 and Jarvis Harris, Landon Stanton and Logan Nation with 12 each.

The Lady Cardinals dropped a 71-27 decision to the district-leading Lady Rebels.

Potts Camp was down 14-2 after one quarter, 31-10 at the half and 50-21 following three periods.

A. Anderson led the Lady Cards with eight points.

Top scorers for Hickory Flat were Marrie Simmons with 23 and R’Daztiny Harris with 14.

The Lady Cardinals (11-12 overall and 6-5 in the district) and Cardinals (12-12 overall and 7-4 in the district) visited Marshall County rival and district foe H.W. Byers Tuesday of this week. They will then host non-district opponent Stray­horn Friday to conclude the regular season.

The Region 2-1A Tourna­ment will be held next week at Falkner.
