Potts Camp moves to round two

The Potts Camp Cardinals scored 31 runs in a sweep of John F. Kennedy High School in round one of the Class 1A baseball playoffs.

Coach Dustin Minor’s team beat the Hornets 15-3 Friday at Mound Bayou and 16-9 Saturday at home.

Next up is a best-of-three series versus Biggersville.

“I am so proud of this team’s accomplishments and the strides we have taken up to this point,” said Minor, who saw his team improve to 15-8 on the season. “We have a few more things we want to make happen this season, and we are still fighting for them.”

The Cardinals led 9-1 going to the top of the seventh Friday and then scored six more to make absolutely sure they left the Delta with a victory.

Dylan Minor carried the big bat. He connected for three doubles and six runs-batted-in.

Zach Humphreys and Landon Houston each had a double and a single.

Others getting hits were Trell Kimmons with a double and Jase Aldridge with a single.

Humphreys went the complete game atop the mound and got the win. He threw 114 pitches.

Game two of the series Saturday was a little closer as Potts Camp got the seven-run victory on its home diamond.

The Cards scored three in the second, four in the third, five in the fourth and four in the sixth.

The Hornets scored four in the third, two in the fourth and three in the fifth.

Humphreys had a four-hit game from the batter’s box. He had a double and three singles and four RBIs.

Kalif Alford hit a grand slam in the fourth. He also connected for a double in the sixth and a single in the third. He had six RBIs.

Caleb Holmes had three hits, all singles, while Alex Hawkins, Minor and Houston each had a hit.

Houston threw 120 pitches and picked up the victory from the mound.

“If we keep playing with a lot of energy and as a team, everything will take care of itself,” Coach Minor said. “We have had to learn this season how individual stats are great but at the end of the day it is about how you helped your team be successful.”

The Cardinals’ round two series versus Biggersville is set for Friday, April 27, Saturday, April 28, and Monday, April 30 (if necessary). The Lions swept Houlka in round one.
