Potts Camp archery best in North

It has been a record-breaking year for the Potts Camp High School archery team.

Potts Camp competed April 15 in the AIMS 2A State Archery Championship at Water Valley High School, where they finished second in the state for the second straight season.

Potts Camp also won its second consecutive North Half Championship for AIMS 2A on March 30 at Lafayette High School. The team broke the school and county scoring record for archery three different times this year, with their highest score being a 3161.

Potts Camp also had eight archers shoot a perfect target score of a 50 throughout the season. Those students are Hunter Palmer, Allison Skelton, Drake Castleman, Braxton Clifton, Austin Andrews, Johnathan Byrd, Lainey Andrews and Yvonne McGuirk. The archery team is led by head coach Anthony Adams, with assistant coaches Danny Mills and Debra Skelton.

On April 1 Potts Camp hosted its second annual Cardinal Shoot-A-Thon and made two special presentations.

The team honored Danny Mills for his 10 years of volunteer service to the Potts Camp High School Archery Team, along with also representing Marshall County and North Mississippi in getting the AIMS (Archery In Mississippi Schools) program started across North Mississippi.

All the money the students raised from the fundraiser went toward starting the “Danny and Billie Mills Potts Camp Archery Scholarship.”

“This was decided and started by the archery team and not the adults or school,” Coach Adams said.

“The kids could have put it towards equipment or other needs but they wanted to do something in honor of Mr. Danny and Mrs. Billie that would make an impact on students and the sport at Potts Camp for years to come.”

The first recipient of the scholarship was senior Yvonne McGuirk, who plans on attending Blue Mountain College or Northwest Community College.

Anyone who would like to contribute to the scholarship fund can do so at The Bank of Holly Springs.
