Patriots win 11th straight district title

Marshall Academy’s shellacking of district opponents continued last week.

With 12-0 and 15-4 wins over Delta Academy, the Patriots finished 6-0 in District 1-AA and claimed the regular season title. It is Marshall’s 11th straight district championship on the baseball diamond.

In doubleheaders versus their three district foes this season, the Pats had a combined winning margin of 91-20.

MA will receive a bye in the opening round of the state playoffs, not playing until the week of May 1 in the quarter-finals.

Zane Looney hurled a two-hitter and hit a grand slam as Marshall blanked the Raiders 12-0 Tuesday, April 11, at home.

In a shortened game due to the run rule, Looney threw 55 pitches in four innings of work on the mound. He struck out three.

His home run over the left-field wall, with the bases load, gave the Patriots an 8-0 advantage in the bottom of the second.

Ryan Brock doubled off the outfield fence and picked up a couple of runs-batted-in as MA took a 10-0 lead at the end of the third.

In the bottom of the fourth, Marshall ended the game on RBIs from Wesley Bolden and Tyler Bolden.

The Pats finished with eight hits. Brock was three for three, with three RBIs and two runs scored. T. Bolden was two for three with two runs scored. Getting one hit each were Ethan Hilton, Looney and W. Bolden. Wyle McMillen and Peyton Taylor each had an RBI.

The MA bats stayed scorching hot Thursday in Marks as the Patriots took the 15-4 victory.

Wil Summerlin and Hilton led the way, each with three hits. Summerlin had a double, one RBI and one run scored. Hilton had two RBIs and two runs scored.

Adding two hits each with two runs scored were Jacob Gadd, T. Bolden and McMillen.  T. Bolden also picked up an RBI.

Brock had a hit and two RBIs, with three runs scored. W. Bolden doubled, with a run scored. Tanner Taylor added a hit with two RBIs.

Taylor started on the mound. He gave up three runs on four hits.

Summerlin pitched four innings to get the win. He struck out three and gave up three hits.

Marshall vs. Myrtle

Saturday, Marshall traveled east on I-22 to Union County and outscored Myrtle 9-7.

The Patriot bats produced 13 hits. T. Bolden led the way with three. Adding two hits each were McMillen, Summerlin, W. Bolden and Taylor. Gadd and Brock each had one hit.

Taylor was the winning pitcher. He gave up six hits and five runs and struck out one. W. Bolden tossed in relief, and he gave up four hits and two runs and struck out one.

Marshall vs. Hickory Flat

The Pats then journeyed back a few miles west on Saturday and dropped a 7-4 decision in Benton County to Hickory Flat.

Looney took the mound loss. He gave up four hits and six runs and fanned one. Gadd threw in relief, giving up two hits and one run.

Summerlin led the MA offense in the three-run loss with two doubles. Hilton also had two hits for MA (13-7).

T. Bolden and Looney had one hit each.

Clayton Smith was the winning pitcher for the Rebels.

Schedule

The Patriots’ scheduled game at Tunica this Friday has been cancelled.
