MSA Bowl Blue Squad wins 23-0

The Magnolia Sports Association Sophomore Bowl Weekend game was held on Dec. 31 at East Central Community College. Several coaches were selected to lead two teams, and three football players were drafted from Marshall County for the annual Bowl game.

The Magnolia Bowl Weekend was created by Kiery Stribling, the owner of Major Drip Athletics. The Senior Bowl game was founded to allow public school and private school students to be able to play in an all-star game together. Stribling decided to add sophomore to the mix after the first year.

Ben Durham, Marshall Academy’s athletic director and head football coach, was named head coach of the Blue Squad for the MSA bowl game. The Blue Squad won 23-0 against the Red Squad.

Clifford Brown, Holly Springs High School coach, was the offensive coordinator, and Rasheed DeBerry, native of Holly Springs and Charleston High School, was the defensive coordinator for the Blue Squad.

“We pooled the top sophomore football players in the state and drafted them,” said Durham.

Wide receiver Devin Snow of Marshall Academy was a Blue Squad draft; defensive lineman Hunter Holbrook of Marshall Academy was a Red Squad draft; offensive lineman Desmond Martin of Byhalia High School was a Platinum Squad draft.

Durham had great talent for his offensive and defensive coordinators.

Clifford Brown, Holly Springs High School coach, was the offensive coordinator, and Rasheed DeBerry, native of Holly Springs and Charleston High School assistant coach, was the defensive coordinator for the Blue Squad.

DeBerry helped coach the Tigers to a 2A State Championship this year.

“It was a great day for Holly Springs,” Durham said.

Durham said Wesley Harris of Marshall Academy, Erick Lofton of MadisonRidgeland Academy, and Tim Melton of Strayhorn High School were also named assistant coaches for the Blue Squad.

Other local coaches selected for the MGA Senior Bowl were Deangelo Ballard, Gold Squad head coach, and Darrell Robinson, Gold Squad assistant coach, both of Byhalia High School.
