Marshall enjoys winning week
Last week was a perfect one for Marshall Academy basketball teams.
The Lady Patriots and Patriots swept both North Delta School and Regents School. Then the girls wrapped up the week with a big win over Marvell Academy, while the boys knocked off Memphis-Area Home School Association (MHEA) in a thriller.
Coach Michael Clifton’s MA girls slipped past North Delta 45-41 at home Monday, Dec. 1. It was close throughout. The Lady Patriots led 1918 at halftime.
Leading the Marshall point production was Tamya Wilson with 19.
The next night, Tuesday, Dec. 2, the Lady Patriots remained on the home floor and coasted to a 52-15 win over Regents School of Oxford. They were up 25-10 at the half and outscored the Lady Lions 21-3 in the third quarter.
Scoring in double figures for MA were Wilson with 15 and Gracie Rappa with 11.
The Lady Patriots finished off the busy week with a hard-fought 63-52 home win over Marvell Academy, Ark., Thursday. They extended a 28-23 halftime advantage to double digits in the third and fended off a run by the Lady Eagles in the fourth.
Wilson again was the top gun for the Marshall girls. She scored 17, with seven of those coming from the free-throw stripe. Others hitting for double digits were Rappa with 15 and Mady Holmes with 13.
The Marshall boys started their winning week with a 6423 rout of North Delta on December 1. Makhi Findley, Carlos Young and Brett Hicks combined for 25 first-quarter points as the Patriots stormed ahead 30-6 after the first quarter and never looked back.
Findley and Hicks finished with 13 points each, while Young added 11.
Coach Jeff Dalton’s squad kept the momentum going December 2 at home with a 72-52 win over Regents. The Pats were on top 35-26 at intermission. They outscored the Lions 23-12 in the fourth.
Findley and Young had huge nights offensively, scoring 22 and 21 points, respectively. Each hit three three-point shots. Kaleb Luse had a solid all-around outing, contributing 10 points, 18 rebounds and four blocks.
The Patriots faced a stiff challenge Thursday night, Dec. 4, and celebrated a 50-49 win over the MHEA Eagles.
MA led 29-21 at halftime before the Eagles rallied to go up by three in the third. The game was tied at 41 going to the final quarter. The teams swapped leads down the stretch. K.J. Luse hit a short jump shot to put the Pats up 5049 with 22 seconds left, and the Eagles’ shot at the buzzer rimmed off.
Findley and Young led the way for Marshall as they tallied 16 and 14 points, respectively.
The Lady Patriots (11-4) and the Patriots (10-1) visited Kirk Academy on Tuesday of this week. They then travel to nearby Rossville Christian Academy, Tenn., on Friday. Next Monday, Dec. 15, the girls will host St. Mary’s and the boys Delta Streets.
