MA teams split against district foes
Marshall Academy basketball teams hit the road last week and had mixed results in District 1-3A action.
At Kirk Academy on Tuesday night, Dec. 9, the Patriots cruised to a 59-25 win, while the Lady Patriots dropped a 44-28 decision.
Three players scored in double digits in the MA boys’ 34-point victory. Leading the offense were Carlos Young with 15, Kaleb Luse with 13 and K.J. Luse with 12.
They led 28-14 at the half and outscored the Raiders 24-6 in the third quarter.
The Marshall girls couldn’t get the offense on track. Top scorers in the loss were Mady Holmes and Tamya Wilson with eight each.
At Rossville Christian Academy Friday night, the Patriots came up short, 70-60, in a game dominated by fouls and free throws. Both teams are highly-ranked statewide in Class 3A.
The Wolves’ second quarter was the difference. They outscored MA 25-14 over those eight minutes.
Seth Williams and Dallas Freeman tallied 22 points each for Rossville. Williams was 14 of 14 from the free-throw stripe.
Leading the Patriots were Young with 14, K.J. Luse with 13 and Makhi Finley with 10.
Two MA players fouled out, and two others finished with four fouls each. One Rossville player fouled out, and two were whistled for four fouls each.
“I honestly felt like we played well enough to win, but I couldn’t keep my key guys on the floor,” said Jeff Dalton, head coach of the Patriots. “I’m really proud of my guys for battling back and cutting it to four with three minutes to play. It showed me a lot of toughness.”
The Lady Patriots rolled to a district win at Rossville. Marshall teams host Lee Academy Thursday night and then visit Northpoint Christian Friday afternoon. The Lady Patriots and Patriots will play in the Calhoun Holiday Classic December 29-30.
