MA off to 2-1 start in district play
Marshall Academy started the District 1-3A portion of its baseball schedule last week by winning two of three games versus Rossville Christian Academy.
A 10-run third inning powered the Patriots to a 13-3 victory over the Wolves in game one of a doubleheader Tuesday, March 17, at home. Cohen Lundine, Charlie Cross and Jaxson Rikard all doubled in the inning with Lundine and Rikard driving in two runs each.
Getting two hits each for MA in the win were Lundine, Rikard, Colt Carpenter and Cash Redding, who also had a pair of runs-batted-in.
Carpenter was the winning pitcher. In three innings, he struck out eight, gave up one hit and walked four.
The second game of the twin-bill was tighter with Marshall taking a 4-1 win over Rossville. MA’s Reagan Allen and Landon Loper combined their strong mound efforts for a no-hitter. Allen, in five innings of work, struck out 10 and walked five.
MA had five hits. Redding and Layton Gray each had an RBI. Christian Smith was the starting pitcher for the Wolves. He struck out four and walked one.
The Patriots took advantage of a passed ball and error to go up 3-1 in the fourth.
The series moved to Rossville on Thursday of last week, and the Wolves rallied for a 10-7 win on their home field. They scored six runs in the bottom of the third to go up 6-5.
Andy Perry worked six innings from the mound for the Wolves and got the win. He struck out three, walked three, allowed only three hits and gave up just two earned runs.
Lundine had four RBIs for Marshall.
The Patriots closed the week with a 6-3 loss at West Union, the top-ranked Class 1A team among public schools in the state.
MA tied the game at 3 in the top of the fifth. Allen doubled in the inning. The Eagles responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth and then a two-run homer by John Grey Morrisson in the bottom of the sixth.
Easton Moss and Allen each had two hits for Marshall in the three-run loss.
The Patriots (7-13) visited West Memphis Christian School on Tuesday of this week in district action. They then host the Black Knights Thursday. MA hosts MUS Friday, hosts West Union next Monday, March 30, and then hosts district foe Lee Academy Tuesday, March 31.
