Lady Pats win four

The Marshall Academy Lady Patriots enjoyed a 4-0 week on the court.

They defeated Winston Academy, Tunica Academy, Blue Mountain and St. Andrew’s Episcopal School to improve their overall early season record to 7-4.

On Tuesday of last week, the Lady Pats traveled to Louisville and avenged a loss from a week earlier, beating the home team 47-38.

On November 1, MA had fallen 44-48 to Winston in Holly Springs.

Leading the way in the nine-point road victory November 8 were Julia Nicholson with 20, Blake Martin with 13 and Sam Wilkins with 10.

Marshall held a narrow 21-18 lead at the half and was up by just two at the end of the third. But a 20-point fourth quarter, while holding Winston to 13, pushed the Lady Patriots to the win.

It was no contest Thursday night at Tunica for the Marshall girls. They dominated the Lady Blue Devils 56-13.

Wilkins scored the first six points of the game and Martin followed that with a pair of threes.

The Lady Patriots were on top 22-3 at the end of the first and stretched that to 47-3 at the half. It was 54-4 at the end of the third.

Scoring in double digits were Nicholson with 14, Bryanna Miller and Martin with 11 each and Wilkins with 10. Miller drilled three three-point shots.

The MA girls then won both their games Saturday in the Coaches versus Cancer event at Lewisburg.

Martin and Nicholson combined for 39 points as they turned back Blue Mountain 46-33 Saturday morning.

Martin scored a game-high 20, including four three-pointers. Nicholson added 19, nine of those coming in the first quarter.

The Lady Pats actually trailed 23-21 at halftime but turned it up a notch in the second half, outscoring Blue Mountain 25-10.

On Saturday afternoon at Lewisburg, the Marshall girls put together a solid four quarters on their way to a convincing 52-28 win over St. Andrew’s.

After Hailey McMinn’s putback gave MA a 10-8 lead at the 4:42 mark of the first quarter, the Lady Patriots never trailed again.

Nicholson’s bucket in the lane and Martin’s long-range shot put Marshall up 28-17 at halftime.

To start the third quarter, Miller had a pair of threes and Martin one as the Lady Pats exploded to a 37-19 advantage. They were in control the rest of the way and won by 24.

Nicholson poured in 24 points, followed by Martin with 15 and Miller with 11.

MA boys

The Marshall boys, continuing to play with a shortened roster due to the football team’s participation in the state playoffs, lost both their games last week.

The Patriots fell 77-63 on Tuesday, Nov. 8, at Winston Academy to a team it had beaten by three a week earlier at home.

MA trailed 41-25 at halftime.

Top scorers were Kyler Moncrief with 18, Rahmel Campbell with 17, Peyton Taylor with 14 and Wyle McMillen with 12.

On Thursday night of last week, the Patriots dropped a 73-63 decision at Tunica.

They fell behind 20-9 after the first quarter and trailed 36-30 at the half and 52-45 at the end of the third.

Moncrief and Taylor were on fire from beyond the three-point line. Each scored 28 points and each sank seven long-range bombs.

After the Thanksgiving holidays, the Lady Patriots and the Patriots (1-3) teams will visit Columbus Christian on Monday, Nov. 28, and go to H.W. Byers on Tuesday, Nov. 29.
