Lady Hawks start season with big win

The Class 3A Holly Springs Lady Hawks tipped off their season Saturday by dominating last year’s 1A state runnerup.

Coach Andre Jones’ squad earned the 47-16 win over Hollandale Simmons in the Grenada Classic.

“Our defensive intensity created a lot of scoring opportunities in transition,” he said. “It was a great team win.”

Senior guard Ashanta Aldridge scored 12 points to lead the way for Holly High. Also scoring in double figures were senior Arriyunna Washington and sophomore point guard Dajah Turner with 10 each. “There’s definitely room for improvement,” Jones said, “but I am excited about this season and looking forward to see how we perform throughout.” Turner, a transfer, is in her first year as a Lady Hawk. “She brings a lot to the table and fits in well,” he said. Both Washington, the leading scorer from last season, and Aldridge are sparking interest from area colleges. The Lady Hawks and the Hawks were scheduled to visit Center Hill on Tuesday of this week. Next Tuesday, Nov. 12, they host cross-county rival H.W. Byers.
