Johnson is looking to reach the next level at Byers

H.W. Byer’s new head football coach, Lonnie Johnson, wants to change the culture at Byers. The Lions has had a successful 10-year run with former head coach Chris Daniels, the school’s alltime winningest coach, but Johnson wants to take the team to the next level.

The new coach has plenty of experience. He was a former running back coach at Rosa Fort High School (Tunica) and was an offensive coordinator at Byhalia High School for four years. His experience will challenge the team to continue the success of the Lions.

The Lions have had the same result for the last two seasons, coming up a game short of the postseason each year.

Johnson wants to take the Lions to the next level but knows he has to build his program from the ground up.

The top players to watch this season are Jabari Wright, Houston Harris, and Mardarian Euell. The Lions lost two members of their explosive trio from a year ago, Michael James and Vincent Talley, but the Lions bring back explosive Jabari Wright, who’s excited to see what his senior campaign brings him.

The Lions open with a Jamboree on August 18 at O’Bannon High School in Greenville.

The season begins at home with county foe Byhalia High School on August 25.
