Holly Springs squads take two from Ashland

• Boys lose in OT to Lausanne

Holly Springs girls and boys combined to score 158 points in a sweep of Ashland January 7 at home.

The Lady Hawks tipped off the evening with a 70-42 win over the Lady Blue Devils.

Ashland stayed within striking distance in the first half. Holly High was up 17-11 after one quarter and 30-23 at halftime.

The second half was a different story.

Coach Andre Jones' Lady Hawks put up 40 points in the next 16 minutes to just 19 for the Lady Devils.

Julia Vaughn had a huge night in the victory. She scored 28 points, hitting 14 of 20 shots from the field. She also had five rebounds and three steals.

Dajah Turner scored 12 points and also added five rebounds, five assists and three steals. Jessica Bohanna and Arriyunna Washington also had five rebounds each.

The Holly High boys snatched control from the opening tip and cruised to an 88-39 win over Ashland.

The Hawks stormed to a 348 lead at the end of the opening quarter, led 50-22 at intermission and then outscored the Blue Devils 30-6 in the third.

Leading the way were Derek Fountain with 17 points and five rebounds, Monterrius Reaves with 14 points and seven rebounds, and Tyhem Reaves with 12 points. Cori Bell had nine points and four assists. Anthony Gulledge grabbed six rebounds and Dylan King had five steals.

Holly High-Lausanne

In a battle between two of the region's top teams, the Hawks lost to Lausanne 64-60 in overtime Friday at the Ultimate South Showcase in Memphis, Tenn.

The Hawks let a 41-34 lead after three quarters slip away.

The Lynx rallied to tie the contest at 54 and send it to OT and then outscored Holly High 10-6 in the extra period.

Top point producers for the Hawks were Fountain with 19, T. Reaves with 14, Bell with 11 and King with nine.

"I think we were the better team," coach Kenzaki Jones said. "We missed out on a few opportunities. We had a chance to win in regulation at the free-throw line but missed."

He was frustrated with the officiating, as Fountain battled through foul trouble all night, while Lausanne's big man, Moussa Cisse, was whistled for one foul in the first half and one in the second half.

"Derek (Fountain) got two weak fouls on him early in the first quarter and had to sit most of the first half," Jones said. "He had four total (in the game) so I had to keep him from fouling out while their 7-footer was allowed to beat us up."

The Hawks' defense held Cisse to two points in the first half and three in the second half. The rest of his points (six) came in overtime.

"Derek (Fountain) was clearly the best player on the floor Friday night with Penny Hardaway (head coach at University of Memphis) and Tony Madlock (Hardaway's assistant) in attendance.

"I'm certainly not blaming the refs for the loss, but I feel that the best team didn't win Friday night," Jones said.

"Overall, our guys played hard, and I'm proud of the way they played. Lausanne knows Holly Springs was in the building no doubt about it."

The Lady Hawks (12-5) and the Hawks (14-5) visited Water Valley Tuesday for Region 2-3A games.

They host North Panola Friday in district action before going against non-district opponent Horn Lake next Tuesday, Jan. 21, at home.
