Hawks sweep Red Panthers

The Holly Springs Hawks won home-and-away games versus Coahoma County last week to improve to 5-0 overall on the season and 4-0 in Region 2-3A.

Game one Tuesday, March 31, at Sam Coopwood Park proved to be no contest from the get-go. Holly High scored early and often, winning 16-1.

C.D. Faulkner had a pair of hits for coach Sam Greer’s Hawks and stole three bases. Derwin Hamer’s afternoon offensively included a hit, two runs-batted-in and two stolen bases. Karlo Strickland had a hit and two stolen bases. Jeremiah Dowdy added a hit, and Joshua Walker swiped a pair of bases.

Defensively, Walker and Strickland each had five putouts. Hamer picked up the pitching win in the shortened contest due to the run rule.

The Hawks had a little tougher time with the Red Panthers on the road but left Clarksdale Thursday with an 8-3 win.

Holly High earned 13 walks off Coahoma County pitching. Getting one hit each in the five-run victory were Dowdy, Cameron Jenkins and Braylon Robinson. Dowdy swiped four bases and Walker three.

Hamer again earned the victory from the mound. He struck out 12.

The Hawks will face their toughest test of the season this week in a pair of games that will determine first and second place in the district. They hosted Independence Tuesday at home, and then they travel to the home of the Wildcats Friday. Next Tuesday, April 14, Holly Springs will host H.W. Byers.
