Hawks, Indians drop district openers
A pair of football teams from Marshall County kicked off district play last week with losses.
Holly Springs struggled out of the starting gate, giving up 21 first-quarter points to Region 2-3A foe Independence. The Hawks went on to drop the Thursday night home contest 41-6 to the Wildcats.
Independence scored on its opening drive. Holly Springs looked to answer and got a couple of big runs from Kyson Isom to move the ball into Wildcat territory. However, the Hawks fumbled the ball away at the 39-yard line.
The visiting squad increased its lead to 35-0 by halftime. Holly Springs’ mistakes gave the Wildcats excellent field position for three of the first-half scores, with possessions starting at the 9-, 28- and 19-yard lines.
Isom got the Hawks on the scoreboard in the second half.
In other county action last Thursday, the Byhalia Indians traveled to Senatobia and dropped a 64-0 decision to the Region 3-4A opponent.
The Hawks (3-2) host Pure Academy of Memphis, Tennessee, this Friday night. The Indians (2-4) travel to Rosa Fort for another district matchup.
