Greer new head coach of Lady Hawks
Samuel Greer Jr., who returned to his alma mater this school year in coaching and teaching roles, will be adding a new position in 2026-27.
The 1995 graduate of Holly Springs High School has been named the new head coach of Lady Hawks varsity basketball. He replaces Morgan Vickery, who is leaving the school for a job outside of the education field.
“I am super excited to take over the girls basketball program,” Greer said, “and I look forward to helping these student athletes advance in many ways.”
Last season was one of the best ever for the Lady Hawks. They advanced to the state playoffs and finished 21-6. Several players off that talented roster return.
“The girls had an amazing season,” he said. “There is a lot of young talent, and they play hard.” Greer’s father, Samuel Greer Sr., was a long-time football coach at Holly Springs High School.
“Growing up with a coach as a father, I learned all types of skills and techniques all my life,” he said.
Greer was a standout athlete at Holly High and received a scholarship in football at Murray State University. He earned his undergraduate degree in English from Rust College and his master’s degree in education from Bethel University.
His coaching career began as a volunteer while doing his student teaching at Holly Springs High School in 1998. In addition to working in Mississippi, he has taught English and computer science and coached at schools in Louisiana and Tennessee. This school year in Holly Springs, he coached peewee and junior high basketball, assisted with varsity boys basketball and served as head baseball coach. He has been Coach of the Year four times in the North Mississippi Junior High Athletic Conference.
“The growth mindset is a key goal of mine,” Greer said. “I want the student athletes to learn new ways to accomplish positive goals.”
He said fans can expect the Lady Hawks to play fast and smart.
“This summer we will not compete in a lot of organized tournaments,” Greer said. “Our summer will consist of learning a new system and working on fixing weaknesses.”
