Famous sports' curses
On this Halloween Eve, I want to take a look back at some of the most famous curses that’s sports have ever seen.
The most infamous curse in sports history is “the Bambino curse.” Yes, arguably the biggest mistake ever is when the Boston Red Sox traded the greatest home run hitter humanity has ever seen.
Mr. Call his shot, Babe Ruth. Ruth was traded to the New York Yankees for one hundred thousand dollars back in 1919. The move backfired as the Yankees won four World Series titles in nine years. Before 2004, the last championship the Red Sox won was, you guessed it, 1918, the last season Babe was apart of the baseball club. For 86 years, the Red Sox struggled to win a championship, all thanks to “The Bambino Curse.”
Let’s take a trip down to the “Big Easy,” and no, not for Mardi Gras, but the curse of the Superdome. That’s right for many of you who didn’t know, especially generations like millennials or generation Z. The home of the New Orleans Saints was built on a 19thcentury graveyard. Pretty spooky, you might ask? It took the Saints 33 years to win their first home playoff game after opening in 1975. But after 2005, the curse was most definitely lifted. New Orleans since 2010 has won ten home playoff games along with a Super Bowl.
This last curse I want to talk about isn’t really sports-related, but this curse has lasted over 20 plus years. I’m talking about the infamous “Madden Curse.” When Madden first hit the shelves back in 1999, it took the gaming world by storm. But Madden would also have a dark side to it. According to cbssports.com, 58% of the cover athletes from 20002024 have been affected by the “Madden curse.” However, only 25% of the cover athletes from 2014-2024 have been affected. Next time when you’re campaigning for your favorite player to land on the cover, please remember there’s a 50/50 chance he may not finish the season.
Happy Halloween.
