Craziest sports weekend ever

What’s that sound you hear? It’s the sound of a true sports fan as I finally exhale after the most thrilling sports weekend of all time. From Thursday all the way up to early Monday morning, sports did its thing.

After a late comeback on Thursday night football, Falcons QB Kirk Cousins had the entire Mercedes-Benz stadium “Swag Surfin.” This comes after the Falcons clinch the overtime win after a passing play that went over 60 yards. If you’ve been under a rock, you wouldn’t know what happened.

Saturday was pretty unusual. Five of the top 11 teams went down. The biggest to go down was number one Alabama, after Vandy did the unthinkable. It’s been 40 odd years since the Commodores last victory of the Crimson Tide, but hey, as the famous Homer Simpson says, “Nothing lasts forever.”

Saturday’s college football slate started in Berkeley, Calif. College Game Day, for the first time ever, hosted their Saturday morning show on the campus of the University of California. Saturday also ended in Berkeley, as we were all up at 1 a.m. Watching the greatness of arguable Heisman front-runner Cam Ward lead the Canes all the way back from a 25-point deficit to win by two. Five hours later, the NFL kicked off in London as the Minnesota Vikings hosted the NY Jets. The Vikings were running away with the game until the Jets offense began to click late in the game. But despite a comeback attempt, the Vikings would seal the win on a clutch interception by future HOF Stephon Gilmore.

Plenty of great NFL games happened in between the early and late games, but Sunday night ended on what turned out to be the game of the week. The Dallas Cowboys traveled to Pittsburgh to face old-time rivals the Pittsburgh Steelers. A game full of bananas came down to the final drive of the game, which like the Miami/CAL game ended at one in the morning due to weather delay. QB Dak Prescott put the Cowboys on his back and led a 76-yard game-winning drive to win the game 20-17. The MLB postseason is also in full swing and also adding to the chaos along with the WNBA playoffs and Nba preseason.

So I get why Andy Williams said this is the most wonderful time of the year--It’s the sports equinox. For those who don’t know what the sports equinox is, just look it up and you’ll understand my joy behind this week’s column.
