Coleman hosting camp July 11-13 at Holly High

Kourtney Coleman is bringing her own basketball camp to Marshall County.

The former H.W. Byers standout player, who also played at Troy University in Alabama, has helped with a girls camp in the past but this year is the first Back to the Basics Basketball Skills Camp for both girls and boys.

It will be held July 11-13 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Holly Springs High School gymnasium. Registration fee is $20 per athlete (ages 12 and older).

She said Andre Jones, head coach of the Holly Springs Lady Hawks, reached out to her about working with his girls.

“That’s what initiated the idea of doing my own camp,” Coleman said, “but I decided I did not want to limit it to just the girls.”

Her father, Sylvester Kilgore, is the head coach of the Holly Springs High School boys basketball team.

The camp will focus on fundamentals and include drills that young athletes can work on at home. Plus, there will be some competition.

Fifty percent of the proceeds will go to the Holly High basketball program.

“My vision for the Back to the Basics Camp is to rotate it to different schools each year in Marshall County, and that school would be the beneficiary of the donation,” Coleman said.

She is a 2011 graduate of Byers, where she was a member of three state championship teams under coach Jason Thompson.

Coleman, 24, played in 118 games over four seasons at Troy. Her senior season she averaged 7.6 points per game and scored a career high 27 points versus Georgia State.

She received her bachelor’s degree from Troy in physical education in 2015 and a month ago received her master’s from Troy in kinesiology with a coaching concentration.

Those wanting to participate in the July 11-13 camp can pre-register by email at Chuntay35@gmail.com or call or text Coleman at 901-647-8131. They can also register on the first day of camp.
