Quarterback Derrion Johnson (8) of the Cardinals attempts to fend off Ashland defensive player Marterius Thompson (50)

Cards will face Eagles for district crown

A 50-8 win over Ashland puts Potts Camp playing for a Region 2-1A championship Thursday night at Falkner.

“It will be for all the marbles,” said Chris Daniels, head coach of the Cardinals. “We need to get off to a fast start on the road.”

Falkner and Walnut are consolidating next school year, so this will be the final regular season football game ever for the Eagles, and it’s on their home field for a district crown.

“They will have a really big crowd,” Daniels said. “It will also be their Senior Night.” No matter the outcome, both Potts Camp and Falkner will host first-round state playoff games.

The Cardinals, on their Senior Night last Friday versus the Blue Devils, cruised to the 42-point win.

A Malachi Brownlee 1-yard run and a 20-yard pass from Derrion Johnson to Braxton Totten gave Potts Camp early control. Tylan Love and Johnson tacked on twopoint conversions for the 16-0 lead.

Ashland answered. With 11 seconds left in the first quarter. D’quavion Evans scored on a 4-yard quarterback keeper. Kemauree Epps carried for the two.

But that was all the scoring for the Devils on this night, and the Cardinals tallied five more touchdowns. In the second quarter, the scores came on Johnson’s 39-yard run, Jeff Curry’s 5-yard burst, and a 25yard pass from Johnson to Totten. The score was 34-8 at halftime.

Johnson threw to K.J. Jeffries for a 41-yard score at the 9:05 mark of the third, and he also carried for two. Late in the quarter, Love closed the Cards' scoring with a 1-yard plunge, and Jeremiah Evans cashed in the two.

Potts Camp goes into the regular season finale with a 5-2 overall record and 2-0 district mark. Falkner is 5-3 overall and also 2-0 in district play.
