Cards knock off Rebels, Trojans

The Potts Camp Cardinals opened and closed the week with wins, while dropping two to District 1-2A foe East Union in-between.

Coach Dustin Minor’s squad crushed Thrasher 18-3 Monday, March 15, on its home field.

The Cards erupted for six runs in the first inning, seven in the second and five more in the third to end the contest early due to the run rule.

Leadoff man Jamie Muse ignited the offense with a triple in the first. Then Grant Martin singled and recorded the run-batted-in.

Ty Bolden and Nick Nichols each drove in a pair of runs in the opening inning.

Nichols had another RBI in the second, and teammate Drew Hogan drove in a run with a single.

Ian Clifton tossed a one-hitter in three innings of work and earned the victory. He threw 41 pitches and struck out two Rebels.

Potts Camp fell 7-0 at home Tuesday, March 16, to East Union.

The Urchins scattered their runs over seven innings ­ getting one in the first, one in the third, three in the fourth and two in the sixth.

The Cardinal offense struggled against East Union’s Carter Phillips, who threw a 79-pitch, complete-game win.

Bolden tossed 103 pitches in the loss. He was relieved by Muse, who threw 24.

Potts Camp then traveled to Blue Springs Thursday and dropped a 7-1 decision to East Union.

The Cardinals tied the game a 1 in the bottom of the first. A single by Nichols scored Darius McNeal, who had reached on an error.

The Urchins added two in the third, one in the fifth and three in the sixth.

Aldridge started on the mound for Potts Camp and threw 85 pitches. He was relieved by Muse, who tossed 11.

Rudy Baldwin got the pitching win for East Union.

Potts Camp then wrapped up the week on the diamond with a thrilling 10-9 home win over Bruce Saturday.

The Cards rallied from a 92 deficit. They scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game, and then won it in the bottom of the seventh on Hogan’s RBI.

Nichols had a pair of hits for Potts Camp in the win over the Trojans.

Martin started on the mound for the Cards and threw 75 pitches. Austin Culver tossed 42 pitches in relief and picked up the win.

The Cardinals (6-4 overall and 0-2 in the district) hosted Class 6A Southaven Monday and then hosted district opponent Walnut Tuesday. They host Jumpertown Thursday at 4:30 p.m. And then travel to Walnut Friday at 5. Saturday, they go to West Union at 11 a.m. Next Tuesday, March 30, they visit district foe Mantachie at 5 p.m.
