Cards cruise to district win

Potts Camp set the tone quickly Friday night against cross-county rival H.W. Byers.

Lamarion Bobo returned the opening kickoff 75 yards for a score, and the Cardinals never surrendered the momentum, cruising to a 52-19 win in the Region 2-1A contest.

“That was big,” said Potts Camp head coach Chris Daniels. “When you score to start the game, that takes a little energy away from the other team.”

Potts Camp added three more first-quarter scores. The first two came courtesy of Byers turnovers — Derrion Johnson on a 5-yard quarterback keeper and Jeff Curry on a 12-yard run. Curry carried 1 yard for another touchdown at the 1:24 mark of the opening period to make it 30-0.

In the second quarter, the Lions got on the scoreboard via Kesean Lafrance’s 1-yard plunge.

The Cards answered with two touchdowns — an 85-yard kickoff return by Braxton Totten and a 1-yard carry from Tylan Love. The lead was 44-7 at intermission.

Tallying second-half scores for Byers were Lafrance on a 20-yard run and Derrick Malone on a 60-yard reception. For Potts Camp, Johnson added another keeper for a touchdown, this one covering 38 yards.

The Cardinals (4-2 overall, 1-0 district) wrap up the regular season by hosting district opponent Ashland (0-8, 0-1) Friday and traveling to district foe Falkner on Thursday, Oct. 29.

“We can’t overlook Ashland,” Daniels said.

“They have a lot of good athletes. We have to have a good week of practice in preparation for Ashland. Win that one, and then we get ready to go to Falkner and try to win a district championship.”

Next up for the Lions (0-5, 0-1) are games at Falkner this week and at Ashland to close the regular season.
