Cards blank Eagles

The Potts Camp Cardinals, who play their home games adjacent to the railroad track, got off on the right track Friday night.

Head coach Darrow Anderson’s team dominated Falkner 38-0 in the season-opening game.

“As a whole, we looked pretty good,” he said. “We have some things to fix, of course, but it was a good first game.”

The first quarter was scoreless.

With 10:27 left in the second, Isaac Rodriguez got the point production started with a 2-yard run behind a good push from the offensive line. Ethan Bridges added the extra-point kick.

Eight minutes later Treyvion Rooks scored on a 10-yard run. Quarterback Peyton Aldridge cashed in the two-point conversion.

The momentum continued to swing the Cardinals’ way when Mattox Work recovered an onside kick.

In the last minute of the first half, Aldridge threw to Mario Jenkins for a 30-yard touchdown. Rooks ran for the conversion to give the home team a 23-0 advantage.

Aldridge and Britten Traylor hooked up on a 62-yard pass play for six points with 11:05 left in the third. Aldridge kept for the two-pointer.

The Potts Camp defense picked up the final touchdown of the night. Traylor picked off a pass and returned it 99 yards for the score with 11:16 to go in the fourth. Bridges kicked the extra point.

“I thought we did a good job offensively in the first half and early in the second half, but then we had sort of a lull,” Anderson said. “We lost some focus but then got zoned back in.

“Our blocking was so much better (than last year). We ran the ball well and threw with some success, too.”

Meanwhile, the Potts Camp defense earned the shutout of the Eagles.

“I don’t think we gave up but one or two first downs in the first half,” he said.

“As a whole, I thought our defense was physical, fast and flying to the football.” Potts Camp had 240 yards total offense, 126 rushing and 114 passing.

Aldridge was five of 15 through the air for 114 yards and one interception. He rushed for 24 yards.

Traylor had two catches for 78 yards and a score.

Rodriguez ran seven times for 42 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Traylor had two picks, and Rooks finished with three tackles, two tackles for loss. Drew Hogan had an interception.

The Cardinals will travel to Tennessee in week two of the season. They face Macon Road Baptist School Friday night.
