Cardinals take two from H.W. Byers

It was a three-for-four week on the baseball diamond for coach Dustin Minor’s Potts Camp team.

The Cardinals scored 36 runs in the four games, sweeping Marshall County rival H.W. Byers, knocking off Tremont and falling by just one run to Hickory Flat.

Potts Camp opened the Region 2-1A twinbill versus the rival Lions Thursday with an 11-0 win at home.

The Cardinals scored eight runs in the bottom of the second.

Jase Aldridge had a triple and a pair of runs-batted-in that inning, plus Caleb Holmes and Landon Houston added a single each.

Dylan Minor was the winning pitcher. In two innings of work, he struck out four and walked one.

Potts Camp won game two by a 5-1 final.

Byers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Zack Snow led off the game with a single, the Lions’ only hit in the loss, and later scored.

The Cardinals tallied two in the bottom of the first and three more in the third.

Getting big hits in the third were Houston, a double and RBI; Aldridge, a single and RBI; and Zach Humphreys a triple and RBI.

Trell Kimmons threw 30 pitches and picked up the win from the mound. Kalif Alford threw in relief.

Cardinals-Hickory Flat

It was a scoring fest on Tuesday of last week as Potts Camp fell 10-9 on the road to the Rebels in district action.

The Cardinals had a 9-8 lead going to the bottom of the seventh. The first two Hickory Flat batters, Randy Cross and Wesley Green, earned walks to lead off the bottom of the seventh and later scored to end the game. Alex Tatum and Kolten Cook had the key RBIs for the Rebs.

Potts Camp scored four of its runs in the top of the fifth as it sent nine batters to the plate. Marterrian Donnell and Minor each had a double, with Minor driving in a pair of runs. Alford, Kimmons and Humphreys all singled in the inning.

Minor and Humphreys each had two hits to lead the effort on offense.

Clayton Smith and Ty McGregeor had a pair of hits apiece for Hickory Flat.

Cardinals-Tremont

Potts Camp opened diamond action last week with an 11-1 rout of non-district foe Tremont at home.

Aldridge was the winning pitcher. Tossing in relief were Kimmons and Devin Sanders.

The second inning was a huge one for the Cards as they scored eight runs to secure the victory.

Potts Camp earned five walks in the inning. Two batters were hit by pitches. Plus, Jaquives Muse had a single.

Kimmons had two hits in the 10-run win, including a triple and RBI in the sixth.

The Cardinals (10-5) hosted Ashland Monday and visited Myrtle Tuesday. They will host Myrtle Friday at 5 p.m. and then visit Pine Grove Saturday at 11 a.m. Next Monday, April 16, they travel to Tremont at 4:30 p.m., and next Tuesday, April 17, they close the regular season by visiting Walnut at 6:30 p.m.
