Cardinals soar past Macon Road

Potts Camp found the end zone early and often when it journeyed into neighboring Tennessee Thursday night.

The Cardinals scored all six of their touchdowns in the first half and left Macon Road Baptist School with a 43-0 win.

The clock ran non-stop in the second half due to the wide margin, with everybody getting some playing time, head coach Darrow Anderson said.

“Before kickoff, I told our players we needed to jump on them early and not give them a chance to be in the game,” he said. “We got after them early and didn’t let up. We did exactly what we wanted to do.”

It was the second straight shutout to open the season for the Cards — outscoring those two foes 81-0.

“All is going well for the most part,” Anderson said. “Of course, we still have things to work on. We have to get better before district play starts.”

Potts Camp led 22-0 at halftime. The first-half touchdowns came on a pair of Peyton Aldridge passes, 50 yards to Peyton Baldwyn and 8 yards, to Mario Edwards, and the other on a 6-yard run by Treyvion Rooks.

The Cards were two of three on twopoint conversions after those scores — a Rooks carry and a pass from Aldridge to Edwards.

Aldridge ran for two scores in the second quarter. The first covered 8 yards and the second one 14 yards.

A try-for-two failed after his first touchdown run. Then Isaac Rodriguez carried for the conversion after the second score. It was 36-0.

The Potts Camp defense came up with the last touchdown of the evening. Baldwyn picked off a pass and returned it 50 yards for six points. Ethan Bridges kicked the extra point.

“I thought we came out and played a pretty good football game,” Anderson said.

“Peyton threw the ball well and made some great reads. Our blocking up front was some of the best we’d had in awhile. We were firing off the football.

“Defensively, I thought we played well, too. Our guys were flying to the football.” The Cardinals amassed 330 yards total offense, most of that in the first half.

Aldridge was nine of 13 passing for 141 yards and two touchdowns.

Potts Camp had 189 yards rushing. Three backs ran for 50 yards or more — Aldridge with seven carries for 53 yards, Rooks 11 for 52 and Rodriguez nine for 50.

Defensively, Tucker Owings had five tackles, one tackle for loss, caused a fumble and had a pass break-up.

The Cards intercepted three passes — one each by Baldwyn, Rooks and Edwards. Josh Green had a fumble recovery. The defense held Macon Road to 42 yards total offense — 10 rushes for minus 28 yards and four of 14 passing for 70 yards.

The Cards (2-0) travel to Coldwater Friday for a 7 p.m. Kickoff. The Cougars lost their opener, 14-12 to Strayhorn, and did not play this past weekend.

On September 17, Potts Camp hosts Strayhorn and then visits Eupora September 24. District 1-2A play starts October 1 versus Myrtle at home.
