Cardinals defeat Falkner 28-22
The Potts Camp Cardinals traveled to Falkner High School to face the Eagles Friday night. It was game one of the 2022 season and the Cardinals were ready to go despite being shorthanded.
The Cardinals and Eagles are some of the most improved teams in north Mississippi; both look to set the tone for the new year. Both teams traded blows in the first half. The Cardinals, who were without 7 starters, took a 21-14 lead into the half.
Despite the push from the Eagles the Cardinals would grind out the 28-22 win. Head coach Richard Russo said the team had miles and miles of guts
“We finished the game with 17 players, seven players playing out of position, but we kept competing and finding ways to win,” he said.
Quarterback Peyton Aldridge had an outstanding game finishing with both 100 plus yards on the ground and in the air and with three rushing touchdowns.
Senior defensive lineman Jeffrey Moore finished with a team high of 14 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Defensive backs Ian Clifton and Drew Hogan finished with two interceptions each.
“Everyone had a hand in the win. The players had to play out of position, but they had put the team first,” Russo said. “Couldn’t be more proud of the players, managers, cheerleaders and fans.”
The Cardinals are back at home September 2 for the first hometown heroes’ night, as they welcome Kip Collegiate Phoenix out of Memphis, Tenn.
Coach Russo was very pleased with his squad.
“That’s what at a one-nest family does – steps up and plays for each other, finds a way and gets it done. That lesson will serve them well in life.”
