Byhalia survives late comeback from Byers, 34-29

Two of Marshall County’s five high schools faced off on the gridiron to open the season. The Indians raced out to a 20-0 lead, holding that score until half-time. The Lions roared back in the second half to make the game interesting.

The Lions took a 29-27 lead with a minute to go in the game, but the Indians would score a last-minute touchdown to win with a final score of 3429.

Byhalia’s sophomore, CJ Wilson, finished with eight carries for 123 yards, three touchdowns, two receptions, and 53 yards.

Defensive back Devonte Malone had five tackles, two interceptions, and a pass deflection.

Byhalia quarterback Issac Greer was 3-3, 125 yards, and a touchdown. On defense, he finished with two tackles, a forced fumble, and an interception.

“It wasn’t pretty but we came out with the victory,” said Byhalia head football coach Deangelo Ballard. “We set a goal to be 1-0 at the end of the week and we saw it through. We still got to clean up some things, but we’re heading in the right direction.”

The Byhalia Indians will host their first home game against Independence High School Friday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. H.W. Byers Lions travel to Holly Springs to face the Hawks at Sam Coopwood field Thursday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m.

Holly High School Hawks, Mantachie Mustangs 34-12 The Holly Springs Hawks lost to the Mantachie Mustangs with a final score of 34-12.

The Hawks had 175 total yards, 145 passing yards, 30 rushing yards, two turnovers and two interceptions.

Holly Springs Hawks will host H.W. Byers Lions on Thursday, Aug. 31, at Sam Coopwood field. The Lions are coming off a 34-29 loss to Byhalia High School Indians.

Mantachie Mustangs will travel to Ashland High School on Friday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m.

Falkner defeats Potts Camp, 41-0

The Potts Camp Cardinals lost Friday’s home game against Falkner Eagles by a score of 41-0.

The Cardinals will host Myrtle High School on Thursday, Aug. 31, at 7 p.m.

Falkner Eagles will host Walnut High School Wildcats on Thursday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. The Wildcats beat the Ashland Blue Devils last week with a score of 59-8.
