Anderson leaving Potts Camp
Darrow Anderson is giving up coaching for a move into administration.
The head football coach at Potts Camp High School has accepted the headmaster position at West Memphis (Ark.) Christian School. He will start his new job June 1.
“It was one of those things that I wasn’t really expecting to happen,” Anderson said. “The job was offered to me, and I couldn’t really turn it down. It was more of a family decision.”
Anderson was the head football coach at West Memphis Christian for four years prior to the move to Potts Camp. He led the Black Knights to a state championship in 2017.
He will not be coaching when he returns to West Memphis Christian, which is a member of the Midsouth Association of Independent Schools.
“I love coaching, but I’m looking forward to the challenges on the administrative side,” Anderson said. “I’m excited about it.
“I know the area. There are a lot of good people there, just like there are a lot of good people at Potts Camp. I really appreciate everyone for taking me in at Potts Camp. I’m thankful for the support.” Anderson led the Cardinals
to a 15-26 overall record and two state playoff appearances in four seasons.
“I felt like we came a long way from a culture standpoint,” he said. “The wins weren’t where we wanted them to be, but I believe the guys bought into the work ethic and the family atmosphere.”
He said coaches draw close to the kids, and that was certainly the case at Potts Camp.
“It’s never easy to leave a place,” Anderson said. “I was close to the kids. A lot of them, I picked them up and dropped them off during summer workouts.”
Anderson expects the 2022 edition of the Cardinals to be a good one.
“Talent-wise, we were close this past year,” he said. “We just kind of fell off at the end of the year.
“There is a really talented group returning. They have a good chance of turning the corner.
“I think Potts Camp football will keep getting better and better if the kids keep working hard. It’s a good group of kids.”
