Lt. JG Stephen Elgin gains wings

Friday, December 15, there was a winging ceremony in Pensacola, Fla., at the National Naval Aviation Museum. Retired astronaut, United States Navy Captain Kay Hire, was the speaker for the commencement.

Stephen Elgin has worked like a turk since graduating from the University of Mississippi attending the Officer Program for the United States Navy. Hard work and perseverance paid off as he gained his wings Friday and is now Lieutenant Junior Grade Elgin.

His family attended the ceremony and the reception afterwards held at the Officer’s Club. While there, they also toured training jets and got to participate in flight simulations.

Stephen is assigned to NAS Lemoore in California as a Naval Flight Officer to an F/A 18F Super Hornet. NAS Lemoore is the Navy’s newest and largest master jet base.

Congratulations to Stephen on this amazing accomplishment. Good luck to him on his journey in the armed forces.

“…and I in my cap, had just settled our brains for a long winter's nap. When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.” Much like the quote from “‘Twas the Night before Christmas,” local businessman Bobby Bonds rushed to the scene Monday on the courthouse lawn. A utility pole just fell, sending fire and sparks everywhere. It sounded much like gunshots. Thankfully, Bobby was Johnny on the spot with his fire extinguisher to stop the blaze from taking more than it did of the recently laid sod.

Four generations of Mitchells enjoyed the beautiful weather over the weekend at Mitchell Farm. They also took advantage of Konlee’s Jane’s new swing set.
