Community comes together

Long ago, Dwight Shelton was the superintendent of education here. He and his wife had a son all of our ages, Sean. They lived on Maury Street and Sean went to Holly High. He was part of our neighborhood group that ran together for years on end. We were the bunch memes are made of today - the streetlight bunch. We would be all over town, at one another’s homes, on the baseball field behind Holly High, just wherever the fun was outside.

As time marched on, so did the Sheltons. We have kept up throughout the years. On February 22, 2022, Sean married Kim Rodgers in a beautiful little ceremony. They reside in North Augusta, South Carolina. I thought it was column worthy, as there are a lot of us still in our area who will remember Sean and his family most especially his Daddy, who had such a positive impact on our public school system here. Congratulations to the happy couple and here is to many, many years of wedded bliss!

A big shoutout to the amazing employees of the Holly Springs Utility Department who worked tirelessly to restore power last week after the storm. I cannot fathom how exhausted they all have been since they are grossly understaffed and overworked, yet they were boots on the ground to help us all. Each department at HSUD dropped what they were doing to help the electrical side. Crews were also called in from neighboring areas to lend hands.

You witness what true community means in times such as this. Clancy’s Café in Red Banks had no power. What does the amazing owner, Tyler, and his staff do? Fire up their grill and fix food for the first responders and utility workers. They were not concerned about their own situation but more so about how to help. He has always run his business that way, putting the needs of others first. If you have not tried Clancy’s in a while, stop in and show them some support. Not only are the people amazing, the food is off the chart yummy!

Another shoutout to Holly, David and Charlie Johnson. They were kind enough to loan my Momma their generator going into day two with no power. It is the kindness of others in times like this that make me thankful for every friend I have.
