Baseball season has arrived

Welcome to baseball season! Marshall Academy kicked off Friday night under the lights of their home field. The Colonels from Indianola had a long drive back to the Mississippi Delta as the Patriots dominated them 12-1. If you followed this bunch last year, you know they are truly something special. Under the guidance of coach Bruce Branch, they will bring the same intensity as last year with 12 months of added training under their belts. Be sure to catch a game, or several, this season. It is sure to be a wonderful ride all the way to the state championship!

Ole Miss hosted Charleston Southern over the weekend. It was a three-game sweep with the Rebels touting 9-3, 11-1 and 12- 2 wins, respectively.

Baseball is what one would consider America’s sport. There are very few who can say they do not follow at least one team. All the little children in our area are looking forward to the Dizzy Dean season. Janice Wagg of Byhalia has always spearheaded this endeavor flawlessly so all of the Marshall County children could enjoy playing. Signup for the season usually begins in February. Byhalia and Potts Camp have had an overabundance of children register to play. Holly Springs is the last in line to get our children divided into teams, age groups and such.

Sam Coopwood is such a gorgeous park. It is conducive for all types of sports from Holly High’s football team in the fall using the football field to the baseball and softball fields to the basketball court for afternoon pickup games to the tennis courts, not to mention the great concession stand set up with access to every available field and the little playgrounds for smaller children too young to play ball. Everyone, young and old, looks forward to seeing Sam Coopwood park lit up during the spring and summer jam packed with our children enjoying themselves. Here’s to hoping that the season surpasses last year’s, which had a record breaking amount of boys and girls of all ages playing.
