Vacation Time

The month of June is full of events and excitement for many. Some enjoy fishing, water sports, camping and going to the beach. This year I planned a trip with my daughter. She has always wanted to visit Savannah, Georgia; we accomplished that last weekend, but there were some surprises.

We have not been on vacation together since 2014 and were looking forward to spending time together.

In the past, before she graduated from high school, I would plan a trip to Pensacola Beach. My sister Carolyn and her husband Bradley moved there after they got married. After the first visit, we loved the people and the beautiful beach. Our favorite place was Fort Pickens National Park – along the Gulf Islands National Seashore. The park has many historic structures like Fort Pickens, Battery Cooper, and Battery Worth to tour. Several parking lots with beach access are located along the road after passing through the entrance station. Our favorite beach was Langdon Beach. It has a large beach area with restrooms, outdoor showers, lots of parking spaces, and a pavilion. Many memories were made there as `Em was growing up.

But we changed up our trip this year. We decided to go to the east coast instead of our usual visit to the gulf coast. At first, we thought the trip would take longer, but travel takes about the same time as it does to the gulf coast. It was decided – we would make a change.

`Em insisted that we go by to see the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, on our way. She had gone several years ago with her Dad, and as she walked through the historic home, she said she kept telling herself, “Mom would love to see this.” I agreed to tour the home. When we arrived, to my surprise, `Em had saved up her money and bought the tickets, and with her discount at the Marriott hotel, we could stay at a nice place.

I will give the Biltmore Home and Estate a thumbs up on one of my best tours. I would recommend anyone who enjoys history, architecture, and the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains to go and experience it.

You can take the tour at your own pace but be prepared to do a lot of walking. Many people had brought their bikes to tour the estate and some hiked marked areas. We headed over to Savannah after we toured the home.

Savannah is also a historic town. It is a charming town with art, trendy boutiques, and beautiful historic homes on every street with Spanish Moss-filled trees. Plus, the town is full of ghost stories and haunted adventures, if you like that kind of thing.

`Em mostly enjoyed the shops, and I mostly enjoyed the benches outside the shops. I enjoy talking with people, and there is always someone to sit with on a bench. It was swamped in town because Savannah College of Art and Design, SCAD, held its graduation on the first full day there. On the last day, we decided to visit Tybee Island and see what the east coast beaches were like compared to the gulf coast beaches. They are different, not the white sandy beaches like the gulf coast. We both decided the gulf coast was the best for us.

But the best thing about the vacation was spending quality time with my daughter and making memories. Now back to saving up for a trip in the future.
