Smoke Signals and other news
The rain has been such a wonderful blessing. As a neighbor said to me, “I could sit on my porch and watch the grass change from brown to green.” Of course, this will mean a return of the grass cutting as soon as the two front tires on my mower hold air again. That will need to happen soon as the grass is quickly growing.
Last weekend was a welcome break for many folks as well as myself. For a retired person, I certainly stay busy. It was a relief to simply stay home for three days. I had plenty to keep me busy, just did not have to leave the house. Early on Labor Day we lost power. We are on Northcentral Electric and this is a rare occurrence. Of course, it took a bit longer for service trucks to arrive since it was a holiday. The call came from Northcentral saying their system showed our power had been restored – not. They began analyzing the problem again and soon the lights flickered for a moment. It seems when one problem was corrected, another transformer blew. Three hours of no power and the electricity we often take for granted was restored. Fortunately, the weather was not as hot as it had been. I had made an extra boiled egg when I was cooking the night before, so I had food ready to eat. Coffee had to wait, but it was not a great problem. Thankful for the Northcenral crew who is always ready to provide service.
In my Facebook group for Carrier folks where I worked for 40 years, I read of the passing of a dear coworker and friend, Dorothy Payne. Many of us are growing older and have health issues so this is not unusual. However, this one hit a bit harder than some. While I am always saddened at the news of a former coworker’s passing, she and I worked closely together on many projects. I hope that the many kind words left by coworkers will bring a bit of comfort to her family whom she loved dearly. Until we meet again, my friend.
The Town of Byhalia has started a soccer league. It has been a long time in the making. Sixty-two excited kids registered and by the time you read this all will have had practice. No, we don’t have true soccer fields, but we are working with what we have to provide another activity for the youngsters of the community.
No one has complained about using the outfield of the baseball fields. We have coaches for all teams. We are still looking for a few referees. Games are on Monday and Thursday nights.
The upcoming Byhalia High School “Decades Reunion” has generated a bit of excitement with some folks traveling from Texas and Georgia along with other areas. Some locals have chosen not to come (that is their choice of course) or have complained because the fee is too high. To host something like this, you have to rent a building, book caterers, and buy at least a few simple decorations. I can assure everyone that every effort has been made to keep the cost as low as possible with it being only slightly higher than the cost for the last one. The cost of everything we will use has been researched with a few items being donated. Keep in mind that someone had to cover these costs on the front end trusting that you would attend and share in the cost. If you attended Byhalia High School
through 1969 and have not been contacted, you can reach me using any of the methods below.
