Blackberry winter

Blackberry Winter is an expression used in south and midwest North America and a few other countries, referring to a cold snap that often occurs in late spring when the blackberries are in bloom. Blackberries require a period of cold dormancy to germinate, which we have experienced over the last week. As I once again mowed the entire yard on Thursday, complete in sweatpants and sweatshirt, I noticed the wild blackberries blooming in all their glory and the branches reaching out to scratch me as often as possible. Throughout my life, I remember when this occurred near the first week of May, which is the week of my mom’s birthday. I also inhaled all the fragrances of the plants that bloom this time of year. I remembered to be grateful for not having allergies to all the different flowering plants.

There are many activities for the children this summer in Byhalia. The Margaret M. Grow Youth Camp will be held June 5-9 at the Old School Commons for kids ages 8-16. Kids can sign up for Drama or Visual Art Instruction and will have an incredible adventure with either choice.

Of course, Bible Schools will be announcing their dates soon. Volunteers put in a lot of time and ensure that little ones are safe and learn about Jesus.

The third annual Eats and Arts Festival will be this Saturday, May 13, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in Downtown Byhalia. Walk downtown and enjoy a day of live music, food trucks, artists, and shopping. What an opportunity to pick up that last-minute gift for Mom on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 14.

Byhalia Nutrition will be open if you are thirsty, need a little boost, or want to buy Mom a gift card!

Woods Farm Supply has planters and flowers available. Angel Wings Nursery has beautiful potted plants. All the stores in the downtown area have something Mom would love to have.

Byhalia Area Mainstreet will host their monthly Coffee and Commerce on Wednesday, May 17, starting at 8:00 a.m. Start your day mingling with business and community leaders while sharing your business information and plans.

Marshall County Sports appreciates the parents, grandparents, and host of friends and families who attended the games at Potts Camp, Byhalia, and Holly Springs. The kids are so excited to see fans at their games cheering them on. I enjoy seeing former players, especially when they bring their children to play and if they agree to coach or umpire. It is great to see the program continue through these young people.
