Smoke Signals and other news

Shopping can be fun after Christmas

Christmas presents are open. Maybe the decorations and tree are put away. New toys are treasured or possibly tossed aside or broken. School is not back in session. If you have children, you are balancing work life, childcare and answering the endless question you kids may ask, “What can I do? I'm bored.”

After Christmas, shopping with gift cards is fun. Remember to spend some of that Christmas gift money at the local shops in downtown Byhalia. There are many treasures, unique items, delicious refreshments, and pampering services. Plus, there are many places to eat if you are tired of Christmas leftovers. These local restaurants are owned and operated by your neighbors, who are happy to see you and give back to the community. Many local businesses are pleased to serve you. Shop local as much as possible.

Has anyone noticed that the brick downtown has been painted white? It does bring a change to the area.

Have you heard that there will be no more Jackson Vanilla Wafers? Ferrera Candy bought the vanilla wafer company and stopped production. It was the best vanilla wafer. So many dishes will always be different. When my son owned a restaurant, we made a special dessert using them. One day the local store was out of Jackson Vanilla Wafers, so I picked up another brand. The customers wouldn't even eat the dessert with the substitute. To express your objection to the discontinuance, call 866-8663085 to record your comments.

Do you ever think about the history of our town? So many of those known as local historians have passed away. We are fortunate to have a book written by a former mayor, Barton Williams, that tells many of our town's stories. This book is available at the Byhalia Area Chamber of Commerce. If you are interested in being part of a “historian” group, contact Sarah Sawyer at 901-268-3891.

As we survive this frigid weather, check on your elderly neighbors and relatives. They won't always reach out when they need something. Do what you can to keep animals safe and warm.

As in many towns, before Byhalia was settled, events took place in the general area, which determined much of the future for later inhabitants. For example, this area has been under the control of six different nations: Chickasaws, Spain, France, England, Confederate States of America, and the United States of America.

As this year comes to a close and we remember the events of the year, both happy and sad, may we look forward to the adventures coming to us in 2023. As you celebrate New Year’s Eve, please remember if you drink, please do not drive for the sake of your life and others on the road with you.
