Smoke Signals and other news

Byhalia is a busy place

Byhalia Area Main Street Chamber hosted the annual Clean Up the Town event with approximately 60 volunteers. The volunteers helped remove 140 bags of trash and other debris. The Neighborhood Grill and Bank of Byhalia provided refreshments. Several businesses put together teams who helped with the cleanup. Now, let’s keep it clean.

Byhalia Elementary had a great turnout for their Fun Run at the Byhalia Walking Track. Participants received a T-shirt and refreshments and had the opportunity to run off some of their excess energy

Refuge Church hosted The Byhalia Crawfish Festival at the Byhalia Walking Track, complete with Crawfish, potatoes, and corn on the cob. From the size of the crowd, everyone had a great time.

The Byhalia Garden Club held its annual plant sale and auction on Saturday. They had some help with the auction from Rep. Bill Kinkade. A lot of folks will be out planting their plants this week.

The Neighborhood Grill will now be open on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Stop by and enjoy Sunday Lunch with them.

Woods Farm Supply has some cute and unique gifts for Mother’s Day. Take a short drive out to Watson and see for yourself.

Despite the rain, local recreational baseball and softball teams have been playing their hardest. They are not just learning to play ball, but they are learning many life lessons, too.

Games go on through the first week of June, so go out, support the teams, and enjoy some fun.

All winter, I tried to get my bird feeder in a spot where the birds could snack on seeds. I never got anyone to help me put the post in the ground, so I had it leaned against the house, and they were uninterested. Recently a friend put the post in the ground, and the birds are pretty happy with their new find. All sorts of beauties are stopping by for a quick bite. One little fellow has hit the jackpot. He has found the bag of extra seeds and is happily eating from the bag that the others have not discovered. I could put it back in the storage container, but he is pretty comical in his delight in his prize. I can watch him from where I sit and type, so I will let him be.

Graduations are upon us, from the little ones graduating preschool and kindergarten to the 8th-grade graduations to the seniors who are so anxious to be out in the “real world” after thirteen or so years of

attending school. Some will move on to college, and some will enter the job market. Nothing wrong with either choice. Some are still deciding on what they want to do with their lives. There are many choices. Don’t settle for less than that. Then there are those college graduates about to discover how hard being a “grown up” can be. Congratulations to all, and may all your plans and dreams become a reality. Life grown-up is full of surprises and disappointments.
