Smoke Signals and other news
We have just finished up another week of beautiful Spring weather. It definitely has been drier than usual, and the entire county is under a burn ban. In the little bit of time I spend going anywhere, I still see people burning. Maybe they don’t know there is a burn ban, or maybe don’t think the burn ban applies to them. I have a large pile of rubbish that came out of the sheds we have been cleaning out waiting to be burned when the ban is lifted. Until then, it will wait. More than fifty years ago, when everyone burned their garbage, usually in a burn barrel, a fire got away from me and set dad’s pasture on fire. I was envisioning “roast beef on the hoof” as I fought that fire. No one was around to help me. Fortunately, I was able to get the volunteer fire department to come to my rescue. I was treated for smoke inhalation, but dad’s cows were safe.
I had more medical tests this past week and still there’s no definitive answers. The waiting for answers is frustrating to say the least. That, along with not being physically able to do basic things or go places I typically would go is close to depressing.
Emory Independent Methodist Church held their annual fish fry benefiting St. Jude on Saturday night. During the event they also hold a live auction as well as a silent auction. Music was provided by a great band. It was very well attended, and I understand they ran out of food toward the end of the night. I was able to go with my brother and nephew. When we got to the door to pay, a dear friend stepped up to pay for our plates. This was totally unexpected and very much appreciated. I saw so many people I had not seen in a long time. This event is well organized, and it requires many volunteers. I only eat fried food about once a year, and I usually make that catfish.
The Town of Byhalia held an election on Tuesday to fill the vacancy created for Alderman when Delainer Richmond resigned. There were two candidates running, both good choices. The sad part was that out of 760 registered voters within the town limits, only 116 citizens exercised their right to vote. Sometimes things happen that you simply cannot get to the poles, but I cannot fathom that was the case for 644 individuals. I encourage all citizens to attend the Town of Byhalia board meetings on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. Even if you do not live in the town limits, the decisions made in those meetings may have an effect on your life.
Apparently, my carelessness cost me $200 last week. When someone who owed me money handed it to me, I was not where I could put it away and slipped it into my pocket. When I remembered it and went to put it away, it was gone. I’m sure at some point I pulled my phone or keys from my pocket and pulled it out accidentally. I do hope that whoever found it truly needed it. I know with insurance and taxes due, I did.
