Smoke Signals and other news
The summer baseball/softball season came to an end this week with the last game Friday night being a rainout with water standing on the field. That hadn’t happened in several weeks. The grass in the outfield needed that rain badly. I had been exploring ways to get water on it. Maybe this wonderful shower will be enough. The Town of Byhalia is now accepting applications for both fall soccer for kids ages three-12 and adult coed softball. Deadline to register for each is Friday, August 15.
Tuesday night was the Byhalia Town Board Meeting where former Assistant Fire Chief Cody Garrison was named as the new Byhalia Fire Chief. Garrison grew up in the area and has a love for his community.
Wednesday, I took the car for it’s 20,000 mile maintenance. Those miles have added up quickly. Those trips to Georgia do tend to put miles on it, but I’m glad to have a car that will easily make that trip since I will make it as long as I am able.
Thursday took me to Holly Springs where I toured the new facility “The Cage Unleashed,” an awesome new batting facility. There are also pickle ball courts. Join them on September 20, beginning at 10 a.m. For the Grand Opening. They have invested in something for our youth and adults also. If you coach a softball/baseball team or just want to work with your child, give them a call.
Later in the day I visited the office of The South Reporter where we celebrated the 80th birthday of our very own Sue Watson. It was a nice surprise party.
Our sweet boy, Bryson, sustained more seizures this week while at school. He went to the hospital but is home now waiting for instructions from the neurologist. Wheels for Bryson is still raising money for the purchase of a van and a handicap shower. Any donations can be made to Benefit for Bryson Peyton at any Bank of Holly Springs location.
The cooler weather was such a change from the scorcher last week. I pulled out a blanket that stays in my car year-round for such a night. It was such a pleasant couple of days but now back to the heat of August. I do enjoy sitting on my porch waiting for my little dog to finish his business in the middle of the night savoring the coolness of the night and the beauty of this world God has provided for us. The full moon lights the night, and the quietness is peaceful when noisy cars are not speeding by and there are no gunshots sounding nearby.
Have you noticed the many earthquakes and long-dormant volcanoes waking up? With Memphis on the New Madrid Fault, it’s just a matter of time until it is our turn. I remember small earthquakes in this area in my lifetime and predictions of others that did not happen.
With so much ugliness in the world today, remember it cost nothing to be kind. Give others a bit of Grace. Know the full story before you spread untruths.
