Reuniting lost dog with owner

Thankfully, the brutal July heat has relented a bit. When I walked out on my porch during those hot days, I felt like I was walking into an oven. I know several folks who must work outdoors who had to go to the ER from overheating. I hope the cooler weather is here to stay.

I canceled two nights of baseball and softball games this week due to the high heat index. While we want the teams to be able to play all their games, it’s not worth their safety. Most parents were grateful but there are always the few who are mad about whatever decision you make. I’ve been able to reschedule the games that the teams want to play. Some are ready to be finished. This is the last week of the summer season before we move on to soccer. It’s been a good season with more than 150 kids enrolled.

My area was blessed Thursday night with heavy rain. Seems that we got the rain that we missed in July all at once. There was some local flooding and trees down along with power outages. At my house there was lots and lots of water coming down. A neighbor was visiting with his two young granddaughters. It was the perfect rain to play in, and they left drenched and delighted. I must have been on the edge of the storm as just 1.7 miles away at the ball fields there was only a slight shower. Those fields could have used the rain I got as the grass is so very dry.

I became involved in reuniting a lost dog with his owner. I often see the post on Facebbook, but don’t expect to come across the pet. I will spare you the long story of how he ended up where he did. Friday night an injured dog was under the overhang at the concession stand. He was a pit or a pit mix and not being sure of his nature and how he would react to all the kids on their way to the field, I had officers come down to discuss trying to get him help. We did reach out to some rescue groups, but most are full and overwhelmed. One of the parents remembered the Facebook post. We compared all the markings on the dog and determined, although this fellow had lost weight and looked pretty rough after his adventures, it was the same dog. He was given lots of water and a bit of food while waiting for his grateful owner. His paws were raw from walking on the hot pavement. He possibly had other injuries. He did not want to be picked up due to those injuries but after several hours of working with him he was placed in her truck and went home. A big thank you to all those concerned about him and those who stayed with us until 11:30 p.m. To make sure he made it home. A vet visit and treatment assured his owner he should recover in a week or so. She plans to bring him back to the field when he is healed so we can see his real personality.
