Smoke Signals and other news

Hummingbirds continued to multiply

Last week, I shared that I only had three hummingbirds. Upon submitting the article, I went to take my dog out and there were at least eight swarming the feeder and they were hungry. Now I have approximately twelve and they are draining more than four cups of sugar water in less than twenty-four hours. I added a second feeder right away and am trying to locate some of the others I know I have. They certainly let me know when the supply runs out and head for the full feeder when I walk out the door with it before I even get it hung back up. Every time I walk in the kitchen, it seems I need to make more sugar water.

The granddaughter who has been in the Med is still there as of this writing. She had to have a third surgery and is still in the step-down unit. Her doctors believe she is on the road to recovery now. After approximately twelve days of no food (she did have a feeding tube after the first couple of days) she is finally being allowed clear liquids. I have not tried to go and see her as I know how far I would have to walk to get to her. We text often and her mom keeps me updated on her progress. This has been a traumatic experience for both her and the family. Your continued prayers are appreciated. Just a reminder, if you get sick and you think it is worse than you have ever had, go to the doctor. I currently know two other people with severe cellulitis because they did not go to the doctor when it first flared up. One still refuses to go.

There have been a couple of stray dogs coming on my porch at night eating my outside cat's food. It appeared that at least one of them was about to have or had just had puppies. Tonight, one of them was on the side of the road with her babies. This is just so sad. I will try to find them tomorrow and see if someone can help with them. I know I can't take them in, but it makes my heart hurt when animals are dropped to fend for themselves. That is how we ended up with our little one. He is a treasure for sure, but believe me when I say there are no “free” dogs. He has had more than his share of medical mishaps that increased the cost, but just routine care is expensive.

I did return to exercise class this week. I am going to try not to miss except when I go out of town later in June (that story will come to you after I return). Other adventures this week included my cardiology checkup which went well. He gave me a clean bill of health and even said I didn’t have to come back for a year (I had been on a six month return as I was having a few issues). Guess I am doing something right.

Towns in our county will have held elections by the time this is printed. Some of the political rhetoric has been so very sad all over the county. It will take time for healing to take place no matter the outcome. I hope if you live inside the voting areas, that you took your right seriously, did your research and voted for the best candidate for the positions. Decisions made within the town limits also effects those of us who shop or work in the towns.
