Smoke Signals and other news
The beautiful and entertaining hummingbirds are gradually returning. If you choose to feed them, please use only boiled and cooled water and sugar with no other additives — one part sugar to four cups water. Keep those feeders clean and food fresh.
Where are my Moon Pie fans? Amid all the chaos of this week, I was gifted with possibly the first box distributed in the state of Mississippi of the soon to be released “Birthday Party Pies.” I had a hard time deciding whether to open the box and eat them or save the entire box. Finally, I had to open and partake. These are a bit different. The cookie part is more like a cookie. The flavor is vanilla with sprinkles.
Who wants to attend the weekly chair yoga classes with me? I've made it two weeks in a row and plan to go each week. The exercise I need and the one hour it takes gives me an hour when I don't have to answer my very busy phone or work on or think about “ball stuff.” The group meets at 10 a.m. Each Wednesday in the “Flame” of the Methodist Church in Byhalia. Donations are accepted, but not required. For any questions call 901-8269510.
The Marshall County Sports Preseason Jamboree ended on Friday at Sam Coopwood Park with a great turnout and a lot of fun. Kids were making new friends. Kids and coaches learned what they had to work on and got over those first game jitters. Only one incident spoiled the fun and if you have heard about it, just know you may or may not have the whole story. This is about the kids. Learn and respect the rules and the umpires. Holly Springs Park Director, Darrell Thomas and his crew did a great job. League games start on Monday, April 21 at Potts Camp, Byhalia, and Holly Springs. Holly Springs is trying to rebuild their program after a few years of not being able to have a program. Byhalia has a record number of kids and teams and Potts Camp has a great group of kids. Support these kids. There is no admission during regular season games. If you wish to umpire, contact the director at each Park.
Our family Easter was a bit different this year. It was the first Easter I can remember that most of my family was not together. Youngest daughter Ellen's family couldn't work out their trip from Georgia. Since they couldn’t be here, there was no need for an Easter Egg Hunt the first time since I was a child that has happened. To accommodate everyone’s schedule is always a challenge for us, but we try to ensure we get together at some time near the Holiday. Those of us in town went out to eat Saturday night and I spent some time with my daughter Emily’s family on Sunday. It was still Easter and Jesus did arise from the grave.
I managed to get my dog to the vet on Thursday for his annual checkup and shots. This silly dog loves his vet and is so excited to see her. That makes it easier to take him. He also got his nails trimmed, which I can do but he fusses less when they do it. I’ve known he had an ear problem for a while as he would get in my lap and cry wanting me to rub his ears. That was treated also. Don’t worry, I had not been ignoring his ears. I took him in once when another vet was on duty who doesn’t know his history with his ears and didn’t think they needed treatment. I should have insisted and will in the future. Another day we went and there was no vet there. I had been cleaning his ears as best I could.
