Merry Christmas from Byhalia

It’s that wonderful time of the year. Decorations are up, presents bought and wrapped, menus planned and cooking started, and families are planning to gather. Please remember that for various reasons, it is not always joyous. Kindness toward all can go a long way.

Although the anticipated Byhalia Christmas had to be canceled due to rain, rain, and more rain, the spirit of Christmas can still be seen all over town. Be sure and drive around the town and appreciate the work many have put in to brighten the season with decorations.

Flags representing all branches of our military and our country are on display at the walking track.

Remember all our military and their family this holiday season in your prayers. We thank you for your service.

The newly renovated building that housed the barber shop is ready for new tenants. The Old “Elijah” building at Highway 309 and Highway 178 is undergoing renovation. There has already been a cleanup in the back and a fence installed.

Did you know the walking track in Byhalia will be getting a splash pad in the spring? Bathrooms have been installed. New playground equipment will be installed. A sky-cop camera will be installed to enhance your safety.

If you are concerned about the potholes on Highway 309, call 866-521-6368 (MDOT 24- 7 line) to complain.

MDOT had said they were scheduled for repair in May 2023. This is a state highway meaning the state must make the repairs. Let them know you would appreciate these repairs being done as soon as the weather allows.

Byhalia Mayor Debby Weathers congratulate and celebrate the B rating that Byhalia High School and Byhalia Middle School achieved. She told the students, “You are not just dreamers, you are doers.”

Weathers attended the children’s Christmas program at the Erma Rogers Head Start. She said the children were adorable, all dressed up and singing traditional Christmas songs, but her favorite song was the Reindeer Hokey Pokey.

She also was at the State Capitol this week, touring the

beautiful Christmas decorations at the Governor’s mansion. Elee Reeves sent out a request for towns to send an ornament in to be placed on a tree at the mansion. The Mayor reported she saw the Byhalia ornament right away. It was on the first tree just inside the door. A big shout out and thanks to Bob Turner and Patrick McGee for working on the beautiful ornament design! It is very special!

Tours of the Governor’s mansion are free. More information about the tours can be found on the Mississippi Department of Archives and History’s website.

If you are thinking you would like to start an exercise program but need something “gentle” to get started, join the group at the Presbyterian Church in Byhalia on Wednesday mornings at 10 a.m. for “Gentle” Yoga. They will make you feel welcome and help you along your wellness journey.

Did you know Chickasaw Indians were the first inhabitants of this area and have been regarded as the most intelligent and fiercest of all the Indians living in Mississippi. Their largest settlement was in the Pontotoc Ridge area, but smaller villages were scattered over North Mississippi. Early settlers said that one small village existed where the Byhalia cemetery is now located.

Merry Christmas to all! Remember the reason for the season...the greatest gift of all, Jesus Christ, was born.
