When you are 4 years old, what do you do exactly two weeks after undergoing open-heart surgery? You take on a pumpkin playground, tackle the giant slide, try every activity in sight, scale the hay mountain and never slow down all day. We remain deeply grateful to the doctors and staff at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital for the outstanding care they gave our boy.

Smoke Signals

Autumn air and full schedules

Did fall join us suddenly with little warning? We knew it was coming, but the pleasant weather lulled us into believing summer might stay past its time. Much of my outdoor work for the season is done, but there is always more to do.

Who remembers when we didn’t have the simple convenience of switching the thermostat from cool to heat to stay comfortable? In my childhood home, we relied on a wood stove I barely remember. My grandparents had one as well. When Dad built our new house, we had a single propane heater in the main room. Over the years, I lived in houses with central heat or space heaters in several rooms, and some even had central air or window units. When we built our current home, we started with only a wood heater and a blower fan in the living room. I have spent my fair share of time heading into the woods to cut timber for fuel. Thankfully, the house now has central heating and air conditioning, and making the seasonal switch is as easy as adjusting the thermostat.

On Wednesday afternoon, my schedule included the Byhalia Town Board meeting at 3:30 p.m. And a review of the town’s comprehensive plan at 5 p.m. Around 2 p.m., my daughter called to ask if I could pick up an order at the Herbalife warehouse. That meant the order had to be entered and packed before pickup, so I hit the road to make every minute count. It was a close call, but with clear traffic, I made it back to Byhalia just minutes before the first meeting began. I may or may not have exceeded the speed limit just a bit.

On Thursday, I attended the 28th annual Byhalia Area Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament at Kirkwood National Golf Club. While my ability to do heavy lifting is limited, I was glad to sit at the registration table, greet golfers, answer questions and help sell raffle tickets for several great prizes. It turned out to be a wonderful day for everyone on the course.
