LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Kudos to Rubin and Hood for their writings

To The Editor:

There was an interesting editorial from Mr. Larry Rubin in reference to renaming Randolph Street in honor of Ms. Ida B. Wells that appeared in the February 24 edition of the South Reporter that was quite impressive.

His suggestions were to place a large sign in the yard of the Ida B. Wells Museum depicting her birthplace, renaming Memphis Street the Ida B. Wells Boulevard, and to create a commission to study and develop a blueprint for naming or renaming streets in Holly Springs. All three suggestions have a sound base. Implementing these suggestions would actually give Ms. Wells more visibility, thereby identifying three locations in the city that bear her name, the Ida B. Wells Post Office, the Ida B. Wells Museum, and the renaming of Memphis Street to Ida B. Wells. Since Memphis Street is a direct run through the city, renaming Memphis Street would promote this historical town that we so consciously enjoy. It would be a drawing card for tourism.

An article written by Mrs. Fergenia Hood, highlighting cancer awareness, embraces a series of article which appeared in the South Reporter February and March of 1995. It has been 27 years since I wrote those articles, which addressed the seriousness of this dreadful disease. Research has helped to minimize statistics, but this disease is still raging in families today. Cancer is a serious matter and eradicating this dreadful disease is the mission of many, especially families that have experienced cancer themselves or have had family members and friends who have experienced cancer. Our moral and financial support is needed to support cancer research thereby promoting longevity.

Kudos to both writers.
